Can I Drive Without An Air Filter?
The air filter may not look like a basic component, but it is much more important than people think. It is possible to drive without an air filter, but this is definitely not a good idea, because this component can prevent all kinds of debris from entering your climate control system and keep the cabin air fresh and safe to breathe. This is why it is important to always have all the necessary filters in your car and make sure they are replaced regularly.
There are multiple air filters in your car, but they do roughly the same: keep the air clean, whether it's the air you breathe in the cabin of the air your engine needs to run efficiently. Dirt, bugs, dust, leaves, and anything else that may be sucked into your car system are controlled by the work of the filter.
What happens if you don't change the air filter regularly?
The cabin air filter is responsible for processing the air entering the car through the heating and air-conditioning system. No one wants to breathe dirty air, so it is necessary to replace the filter at the recommended interval. If it is dirty, then you may notice reduced air circulation, decreased heating and air conditioning performance, or a musty smell. If something bigger is stuck, you might even hear a whistle from the vent.
A dirty engine air filter can cause more serious problems. You may notice reduced fuel economy, strange noises from the engine, stalling of cylinders, or blinking of the indicator light to check the engine. When your engine can't get the air it needs, it can't operate normally.
How often to replace the air filter?
The air filter should be replaced at the interval recommended by the filter manufacturer, but even this may not be frequent enough. If you are driving in a dusty place, especially off-road, the filter will get dirty more quickly and will need to be replaced more often than recommended.
If a filter looks dirty with a lot of dust and debris, then it's time to replace it with a new one. Checking your filter as part of regular car maintenance can ensure that the filter is working properly so that the air you and the engine breathe will stay clean.
